Defining Landscaping and Groundskeeping
When it comes to outdoor space management, two professions often get misunderstood – landscapers and groundskeepers. Both are responsible for ensuring the quality and upkeep of an area, but the distinctions lie in their scope and approach to maintaining those spaces. Groundskeepers are primarily tasked with maintaining the look and function of already established outdoor spaces, such as parks, athletic fields, and cemeteries. This often involves tasks such as planting, watering, mowing, pruning, and trimming, to keep the grass, trees and shrubs in ordered and healthy state. They also handle general maintenance, such as repairing equipment and checking to make sure everything is running smoothly. On the other hand, landscapers create and design outdoor spaces, such as gardens, lawns, and patios, from scratch. They take into account everything from soil type and natural features to the owner’s vision and preferences, and design a space that will meet the client’s needs. They also choose plants that are suitable for the locale’s climate, sunlight, and soil type and create aesthetic installations such as water features, rock gardens, and retaining walls.Responsibilities of a Groundskeeper
The responsibility of a groundskeeper goes beyond just keeping the outdoor space organized and neat in appearance; they must also ensure the functionality of the space. This includes:- Regular mowing and pruning to preserve the area’s aesthetic features;
- Planting new flowers, trees and plants;
- Ensuring that there is proper irrigation and drainage;
- Maintaining hardscapes, such as walkways and patios;
- Keeping the outdoor signs and fixtures in working condition;
- Performing pest control and weed management;
- Collaborating with other maintenance crews, as needed.
The Role of Landscaper
The role of a landscaper is more creative, with an emphasis on developing a unique outdoor oasis. They are not just concerned with maintaining the landscape, but also enhancing it. Their objective is to work with the client toward creating an outdoor space that serves the purpose and desired aesthetics. Their responsibilities include the creation of:- An overall design concept for the area, such as an outdoor living space;
- A planting plan that includes the selection of the best plants, shrubs, and flowers for the space;
- A hardscaping design, which can include patios, walkways, and natural stone features;
- An irrigation and drainage plan to ensure that plants, shrubs, and lawns are receiving the proper amount of water;
- Structures and lighting to create the desired ambiance for the space, such as pergolas and landscape lighting;
- An installation and project schedule to ensure that everything is completed in a timely fashion.
